Custom Wedding Cakes- Portland Maine
Well here it is folks, The Bakers Confection’s first ever topsy turvy cake courtesy of me, Shauna!! I had so much fun creating this cake from start to finish. This was of course for a Halloween wedding with a red and black theme. The bride and groom decided on a pumpkin spice cake with cinnamon butter cream. Our pumpkin spice cake turned out to be a perfect texture for carving and stacking!
Since I have never created a topsy turvy cake before I had to just dive in head first like I always do with a new technique. This required some research on the best way to create the “mad hatter” effect, but still have a stable cake that would survive delivery. I almost felt like I was making my first tiered cake again! I’m not going to lie my hands were shaking during the assembly of each tier! I also made the task just that much more difficult by using a butter cream coated cake. That didn’t leave much room for error since butter cream is not nearly as forgiving as fondant covered cakes!
Once the cake was stacked, decorated and chilled it was time for the most nerve wracking part for all cake decorators, DELIVERY! I usually don’t travel with 3 tiered cakes, preferring to add the last tier on site. I went for it with this cake, trusting in my husband’s wonderful cake driving skills to get the cake to the reception in one piece! A couple of sharp curves in the road made me close my eyes and wish for the best, but we made it!!
Over all I must admit this is my most favorite cake I have made yet! I loved diving in trying something new. The whole experience was so much fun and in the end I had very happy clients. After all the entire reason I bake is to make other people happy and create beautiful things! Now I can’t wait to make my next topsy turvy cake!
